The scenery in the Harz mountains was as lovely as we expected. The Harz is not a large area and arguably it may look better in the winter? None the less it was worth seeing; lots of good twisties, had we been on the bike!
We had lunch in the pretty town of Bad Lauterberg before continuing on into East Germany. The mountains and rolling hills gave way to large swathes of agricultural land and then to the industrial East. What difference between East and West! No more quaint, pretty towns; well ordered and clean now we were in a cockophony of train tracks, tram lines, cables and endless road works. In years to come all this mess will be worth it, as can be seen by the parts already finished but at present it seems there isn't a road that isn't being dug up. At home a city redevelopment causes chaos, here it's a whole country! So maybe they aren't doing so badly after all?
