D Day - Departure, Dover-Dunkirk

Sat 9th Aug
A considerable amount of deep breaths and reassurance from my deputy plus Vicks vapour rub for Richard and we are finally away, a day late.

Wanting this trip to be as stress and pressure free as possible, we hadn't pre booked a ferry. There is only one day that we have to somewhere on a definite day at a definite time and that is when we fly into Islamabad. As I said, where there's a will there's a way. I just hope Fay behaves herself, without parental guidance, in the company of a swarthy Turk! We have made arrangements to store Fay in Turkey whilst we are in Pakistan. So no worries about time or weather, we can drive to Turkey by whatever route we choose, so long as we are there in time to store Fay and catch the flight from Istanbul. Once we arrive back in Istanbul, we will make it up as we go along. No pressures of visas and length of stay allowed so maybe this is a better option, after all?

There was a ferry leaving Dover at midnight from Dover to Dunkirk. That's the one we'll aim for, we should get to Dover by 10pm, so time for a meal before boarding. We arrive at the docks where we are told "put your toe down, mate. The 10pm ferry is about to leave." We were the last vehicle on and had set sail before we had even got upstairs!

How do we feel, having just embarked on our 6 month adventure? Strangely, nothing? We left quietly, driving off was like a normal "Fay Day" Maybe the small amount of luggage we have to last six months has something to do with that. I've packed more on some biking weekends! I wonder when we will realise just what it is we are doing?

We were ahead of schedule, having got the earlier ferry but it was very packed. There were no seats and noisy kids everywhere, glad it is a short crossing. Once on the other side we drove the short distance into Belgium before finding a truck park to stop for the night. Richard made the bed up while I made a cup of tea....first incident....I got into bed and dropped through it! No I haven't put on that much weight since getting married! When Richard was spoiling Fay with a new table, he had to adjust the cupboard below which supports the bed. We hadn't tried it since then!! Never fear, ever resourceful Richard mended it....with - a peg???!!! My throat feels sore. Oh no, Sleep well!
